Grinding chews the stump and its surface roots out below grade — the permanent end of the story, without the crater an excavator would leave.
What grinding actually does
The machine walks a carbide wheel back and forth across the stump, chipping it into mulch from the top down — standard depth six to twelve inches below grade, deeper on request if a new tree or a fence post is going in the same spot. Surface roots that snake toward the lawn get chased and chipped too. What’s left is a mound of chips in a shallow bowl: leave the chips to settle, have us rake them level, or have the whole pile hauled and the bowl topped with soil, ready for sod. Those are the three finishes; you pick when we quote.
Grinding is not extraction. The heartwood ten inches down stays and decays quietly over the years, which is fine for grass and garden beds. If you’re pouring a slab or setting a structural footing where the tree stood, say so — that spot needs deeper grinding and honest backfill talk, and we’d rather have it before the quote than after the pour.
The pricing shape
Stumps price by inches of diameter and by how many. A lone modest stump is a modest line item — often around a hundred dollars or two. A yard’s worth prices far better per stump than one-at-a-time calls, because the trailer and the machine arrive once. And the best price a stump ever gets is on the same quote as its removal — the crew and grinder are already standing there. That’s why every removal quote we write includes the grinding as its own optional line: take it now cheap, or call us back later and pay the trip charge too.
